“It is the archetype of the mother that is invoked in a Mahayana practice of cultivating a loving and compassionate mind in order to benefit all beings. By following the practice anyone can access their deep rooted emotional repository of care and affection by considering the loving-kindness of anyone towards them.
The first step of the main practice is recognizing all beings as one’s mothers. Because of the beginning less nature of the mental continuum in transmigration, our previous lives have been numberless. Thus, we have had numberless mothers.
Next is to remember the kindness of all mother beings. This is where we may have to “fake it ’till you make it” a bit if we did not grow up in an atmosphere of affectionate care. Here is where the archetypal mother is invoked and we can conceive of her loving-kindness as having been made manifest to us before.
For those of who have not had the fortune to grow up in an atmosphere of affectionate care it is helpful to contemplate these words from the Eight Verses of Attitude Transformation.

The third step in cultivating a loving and compassionate mind is repaying all mother beings for their kindness. While it is right to actually repay your mother-of-this-life’s kindness, the Mahayana interpretation is that genuine gratitude is based on the recognition that all beings have contributed to one’s well-being. In this way we can rise over attachment to loved ones alone to gain an unbiased view of being of benefit to all others. Just as you reconnect with your fundamental childhood need to be loved and to love, don’t forget that this is a universal condition that is an unending necessity throughout everyone’s life.”
Blessings explores the roots of the nuns’ wisdom and compassion and shows how we, as ordinary human beings seeking happiness in a modern world, can find that same thread of sanity and inner strength in the everyday confusion of our lives.
